SFPTI introduces the newest weapon in the fight against cancer

January 2, 2019

Dr. Tim Williams, Medical Director of SFPTI, appeared on the South Florida Sunday radio show on December 30 to discuss the newest advancements in cancer care.

The discussion focused on proton radiation therapy, which SFPTI will begin offering its patients in the summer of 2019. It will be one of only 27 cancer centers in the U.S. that offer this treatment plan, and one of about 50 worldwide.

Proton therapy is non-invasive, pain-free and typically has faster recovery times than traditional X-ray (photon) therapy. It is also a safer and more effective treatment approach because unlike traditional radiation, there is no exit dose associated with proton therapy. Therefore, a tumor can be more precisely targeted and killed without destroying the body’s healthy tissue.

Proton therapy can also eliminate the need for surgery and be combined with chemotherapy to deliver innovative treatments such as immunopriming.

Dr. Williams and the team at SFPTI are excited to offer the highest quality and most advanced oncological care to the Palm Beach County and South Florida communities.
